Turn On, Tune In, Bug Out!

London born Simon Halpin grew up in the big smoke during the late 80's and 1990's and was influenced by the cultural and music movements happening at that time. He remembers school dinner-time when kids would loosen the fat laces on their Puma's, throw down some cardboard and have dance-off's to the new and exciting music coming out of the states. Early hip hop influences gave way to a more electronic sound coming out of Chicago, as it fused with Balearic music the British were discovering in Ibiza. House music in all its forms had arrived in London and soon people would be dancing to it in everywhere from warehouses to car parks, fields to community centers. As London club-land began to fragment and warehouses became super clubs, Simon went along for the ride - experiencing both the more underground dance music parties, alongside those which at the time were considered to be a little more "happening" by London trend setters. Summers would often be spent in Ibiza, experiencing everything the white island had to offer. All of this had a tremendous influence on Simon's music and his life.

Naturally House music would eventually lead Simon back to Disco and New York City, as he found himself in New York at David Maucuso's Loft party. David Mancuso's parties expanded the mind both musically and socially. Acid rock was played alongside acid house and dub with disco. People from every walk of life danced together without inhibition, in a lovingly decorated room, with music played on a sound system which really needed to be heard to be believed. It may have taken a while to find but the search was worth it. Simon had found h-OM-e. New York also had the newly renamed club Vinyl, which hosted Timmy Regisford's Shelter, in addition to Francois K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit's Body and Soul. Both of these parties, along with Francois K's current Deep Space party have had a tremendous influence on Simon.

Today Simon is a key part of London based Lucky Cloud Sound System, a creative collective who have hosted David Mancuso's London Loft parties since 2003. Simon heads up PR for Lucky Cloud, as well as being part of a dedicated crew of balloon blowers and sound system luggers who make the parties happen. More recently, with Cosmo he has hosted Cosmodelica at London club Plastic People. He's also been lucky enough to guest DJ at Beauty and the Beat.

Working with Guillaume Chottin, Simon is a founding member of DeepFrequency.com and its here he's decided to express all his musical influences in a fortnightly Sunday show called "Blood, Sweat & Tears", starting at 8pm GMT. See schdule for show dates.

Radio Hour #16: August 8th, interview with DJ BROADWAY

Soul To Unite Radio Hour has a new mix on their site which appealed to me because in amongst a very soulful house selection, I spotted a Tribal Winds production... Antonio Ocasio..I have always regarded him to be somewhat mysterious in character, probably a great deal of his personality is projected through his amazing love for music, and for that reason I hope he will always remain a producer who enchants and intrigues me. Other tracks in this mix are well worth checking out alongside an exclusive interview with NY DJ Broadway. He is one of the very few deejays left still spinning vinyl, and proud of it too!

Tracklisting:
1. Gregory Del Piero - Love You More (Raisani)
2. Hardsoul - Sweetshop (Dub) (Soulfuric)
3. Dalminjo - I’ll Wait (Dalminjo Remode) (Papa)

7. Julien Jabre - Swimming Places (Defected)

10. Francois K - Enlightenment (16b Remix) (Wave)
11. Gregory Del Piero Feat Kenny - Don’t You Ever Get (Kings Of Deep Soulful Instrumental) (Raisani)
12. Dj Chus & Penn - Sunsine Vs Sonindo Urbano (Urbana)

Samantha James- Angel Of Love

I first heard this track played on cyberjamz internet radio by Wil Milton. His show always seems to drop a delicate soulful tune from time to time.

Samantha James has spent the past 3 years honing her skills within the dance/electronic/soul genre. Her sultry style, vocal cadences, and international rhythms are largely influenced by such artists as Sade, Bebel Gilberto and Morcheeba.

Well worth checking Wil out on Wednesday's, where Milton Music Cafe plays live on air, at cyberjamz.com internet radio. (Click on cyberjamz logo in side bar to link you in)

A couple of tunes from Anthony Nicholson are included from his new"Maniac EP" ( "Life, Rhythm, & Lessons" album - definitely a "don't pass up" if you can get a copy), plus Funkanala's "Bamako", which came out as a limited promo a few years ago.

FW: Onur Engin - Monotape Radio Show

Onur Engin - Be Still My Soul [Straightup] // Available Now! Category: Music

Posted: 15 Jun 2008 02:05 AM CDT

Artist:
Onur Engin
Title:Be Still My Soul
Cat no:SUR0007

Tracklisting
01. Be Still My Soul (original) [listen]
02. Be Still My Soul (Daisuke Tanabe Remix) [listen]
03. Be Still My Soul (1000 Names Remix) [listen]
04. Be Still My Soul (Edseven Remix) [listen]

"After the debut success of his last track, 'Brisk', Onur Engin has been working hard on some incredible tunes and none display the formidable talent of this young composer more than his latest release, 'Be Still My Soul'. Taking the vocal lines from the golden, gospel talent of Clara Ward and writing a very soulful ballad. This is one song that will haunt you and creep into your soul without letting go. The heavy down beats are exemplar and complete with the crackle of an old 78 underneath some sweet jazz piano licks.

From one of Japan's most talented producers, Daisuke Tanabe breaks some beats on his take of 'Be Still My Soul'. Previously having released material on Brownswood Recodings, Fluid Ounce and responsible for one of the more imaginative jazz remixes of 2007 for the Elizabeth Shephard Trio. Daisuke Tanabe takes it all the way to the edge of the broken beat dancefloor. Together Casio Blaster and 99 Mistakes are 1000 Names out of Sofia, Bulgaria. Previously released on Up My Alley and Eklektik Records they assault the tune in their style of chopped-up hip hop. One of Australia's outstanding producers and DJs and 'a reputation as one of Sydney's premier freestyle selectors' (XLR8R) , Edseven is the final artist to remix 'Be Still My Soul'. His take on the tune is one for the dance floor minded. No still feet when Ed is on the decks anyway! Adding a great horn line and some slamming funk snare drums this is straight up joy."

Remixed by Daisuke Tanabe, 1000Names and Edseven

"Powerful set of remixes... I like all the versions, although the Edseven remix is one of my favorites. I will definitely play!!!"

Erik Schneider (Giant Step)

"Dope Tunes. That 1000 names remix is just mental!"

Ennio Styles (3RRR)

"...love these remixes!!"

Simon Harrison (Basic Soul)

"I prefer da original out of all mixes, nice little trip hop vibe."

Simbad

"The original is a real dope one. Not for the floors, but a true iPod banger!"

This is a neat little radioshow, influenced by CASAMENA'S Radio Hour, it is refreshing and interesting to read some reviews written by the DJ's themselves. This gives you an insight into their character and personality, which is reflected upon their individual play. Radio Hour 5 has just been posted, seduced by the groove of house music!

The Surgery

Welcome along to 'The Surgery' an inspirational musical journey from the good Dr Bob Jones who has been at the cutting edge of all things Soulful from the 60's right through to the present day. Dr Bob has been spinning eclectic Black Music to the masses for over 40 years and his award winning 'Surgery' radio show has captivated audiences across the globe for nearly 25 years.

His club nights 'Lift', 'True Spirit' (London's Blue Note) and 'The Surgery' pushed barriers, musically speaking as did his record labels Black On Black and Chilli Funk (with DJ Lofty). He's still found some time to produce numerous Black Music giants including The Temptations, Bobby Womack, Terry Callier, Al Green, Ultra Nate, Jody Watley, Noel McCoy and Snowboy.

To say that Dr Bob is a legend is perhaps an overstated statement, but his dedication to spreading quality Black Music to the world is an inspiration to us all.

'The Surgery' with Dr Bob Jones really is 'so soulful- it hurts!'www.trustthedj.com/DrBobJones
