Pardonez-moi DJ Funkerman..., Are You Following Me?
Funkerman - AKA music-fixated Dutch DJ/producer Ardie van Beek - started his career not in house music but in the heady, heavy, hedonistic world of hip hop. ''It’s true, I started off as a hip hop DJ,'' he smiles. ''I really enjoyed the music and was fascinated with what they did. Cutting and scratching and working with turntables. Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim made me search for more of this music. It made me a collector of soul and RnB because there was so much sampling in the music. I went backwards to disco, rare groove and especially long twelve inch versions that had some extra parts. That was my passion.'' Listen below to Funkerman June 2008 mix. I was keen to check him out because, everywhere I had been last week on the network, seems like Funkerman had been too!

Onur Engin - Be Still My Soul [Straightup] // Available Now! Category: Music
Posted: 15 Jun 2008 02:05 AM CDT
Artist:Onur Engin
Title:Be Still My Soul
Cat no:SUR0007
Tracklisting
01. Be Still My Soul (original) [listen]
02. Be Still My Soul (Daisuke Tanabe Remix) [listen]
03. Be Still My Soul (1000 Names Remix) [listen]
04. Be Still My Soul (Edseven Remix) [listen]
"After the debut success of his last track, 'Brisk', Onur Engin has been working hard on some incredible tunes and none display the formidable talent of this young composer more than his latest release, 'Be Still My Soul'. Taking the vocal lines from the golden, gospel talent of Clara Ward and writing a very soulful ballad. This is one song that will haunt you and creep into your soul without letting go. The heavy down beats are exemplar and complete with the crackle of an old 78 underneath some sweet jazz piano licks.
From one of Japan's most talented producers, Daisuke Tanabe breaks some beats on his take of 'Be Still My Soul'. Previously having released material on Brownswood Recodings, Fluid Ounce and responsible for one of the more imaginative jazz remixes of 2007 for the Elizabeth Shephard Trio. Daisuke Tanabe takes it all the way to the edge of the broken beat dancefloor. Together Casio Blaster and 99 Mistakes are 1000 Names out of Sofia, Bulgaria. Previously released on Up My Alley and Eklektik Records they assault the tune in their style of chopped-up hip hop. One of Australia's outstanding producers and DJs and 'a reputation as one of Sydney's premier freestyle selectors' (XLR8R) , Edseven is the final artist to remix 'Be Still My Soul'. His take on the tune is one for the dance floor minded. No still feet when Ed is on the decks anyway! Adding a great horn line and some slamming funk snare drums this is straight up joy."
Remixed by Daisuke Tanabe, 1000Names and Edseven
"Powerful set of remixes... I like all the versions, although the Edseven remix is one of my favorites. I will definitely play!!!"
Erik Schneider (Giant Step)
"Dope Tunes. That 1000 names remix is just mental!"
Ennio Styles (3RRR)
"...love these remixes!!"
Simon Harrison (Basic Soul)
"I prefer da original out of all mixes, nice little trip hop vibe."
Simbad
"The original is a real dope one. Not for the floors, but a true iPod banger!"
DJ Asparagus (Raw Fusion)

Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love
What you gonna do when you get out of jail?
I'm gonna have some fun
What do you consider fun?
Fun, natural fun
I'm in heaven
With my boyfriend, my laughing boyfriend
There's no beginning and there is no end
Time isn't present in that dimension
He'll take my arm
When we're walkin', rolling and rocking
It's one time I'm glad I'm not a man
Feels like I'm dreaming, but I'm not sleeping
I'm in heaven
With the maven of funk mutation
Clinton's musicians such as Bootsy Collins
Raise expectations to a new intention
No one can sing
Quite like Smokey, Smokey Robinson
Wailin' and skankin' to Bob Marley
Reggae's expanding with Sly and Robbie
All the weekend
Boyfriend was missing
I surely miss him
The way he'd hold me in his warm arms
We went insane when we took cocaine.
Bohannon Bohannon Bohannon Bohannon
Bohannon Bohannon Bohannon Bohannon
Stepping in a rhythm to a Kurtis Blow
Who needs to think when your feet just go
With a hiditihi and a hipitiho
Who needs to think when your feet just go

Who needs to think when your feet just go
Bohannon Bohannon Bohannon Bohannon
James Brown, James Brown
James Brown, James Brown
If you see him
Please remind him, unhappy boyfriend
Well he's the genius of love
He's got a greater depth of feeling
Well he's the genius of love
He's so deep.
*PODCAST OF THE WEEK*
Russ Elevado (Los Angeles, USA)
NYC homie Russ Elevado is a recording engineer and record producer, whose work on D'Angelo's critically-acclaimed 'Voodoo' album gained him a Grammyaward in 2000. Following the success of 'Voodoo', he has worked with some of the most influential artists and producers of our times, including Alicia Keys, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Roberta Flack, Al Green, Blackalicious and Common. Russ' work is considered to have a vintage sound, and he remains staunchly faithful to analogue recording techniques and equipment in the modern era of digital recording, and still uses analogue tape as his recording medium. In his couch session, he talks about recording techniques, the importance of the signal path, and how the engineer can easily find himself between the artist, the A&R, and the major record label.

Disc Jockey Tip.
DJ's, Audio Downloads, and Bitratesby DJ Rob Wegner
Summer 2008
As the DJ profession goes digital, the increasing reliance on internet downloads necessitates an explanation of the importance of file bitrates -- particularly as it relates to audio quality and sounding professional.
The more bits per second, the more audio resolution. Hence, an audio file with a bitrate of 128 kbit/s will have less sound quality compared to an audio file of 320 kbit/s. Likewise, an audio file of 320 kbit/s will have less sound quality compared to a .wav file of 1411 kbit/s.
As a rule, you should avoid playing songs with a bitrate below 192 kbit/s.
This is because tracks played on a quality sound system with a bitrate below 192 kbit/s will sound like an "AM radio on steroids." It's harsh sounding to the ears and will potentially have an adverse effect on your dance floor response.
You can often determine the bitrate of a song by placing the mouse cursor/pointer over the song file icon, whereby a box depicting the bitrate should open.
Be aware that some internet downloads -- particularly free/unlicensed downloads -- are of low bitrate quality. For example, a downloaded track could have been originally recorded from a radio station signal (FM radio stations have a bitrate of 96 kbit/s), which means that those tracks will sound harsh when played on an amplified system.
Bitrate Chart
8 kbit/s - telephone quality (using speech codecs) 32 kbit/s - MW (AM) quality96 kbit/s - FM quality128160 kbit/s - Standard Bitrate quality; difference can sometimes be obvious (i.e. bass quality)128 kbit/s - iTunes before "iTunes Plus"192 kbit/s - DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) quality. Quickly becoming the new 'standard' bitrate for MP3 music; difference can be heard by few people.224320 kbit/s - Near CD quality. Sound is nearly indistinguishable from most CDs.256 kbit/s - iTunes Plus320 kbit/s - XM Satellite Radio (unconfirmed)1411 kbit/s - .wav files
Ideally, you want to play the best audio quality tracks available (i.e., original CD, .wav or .aiff files). However, because these files consume a great deal of space (i.e., audio CD files typically consume 10 MB of computer disk space for every minute of music), these files take a lot of time to upload/download (even with high-speed internet connections). For this reason, large files are reduced utilizing programs such as Cdex 1.30 -- which helps to reduce upload/download time. Even when reducing larger audio files, I recommend maintaining the 192 kbit/s rule.
