The Surgery

Welcome along to 'The Surgery' an inspirational musical journey from the good Dr Bob Jones who has been at the cutting edge of all things Soulful from the 60's right through to the present day. Dr Bob has been spinning eclectic Black Music to the masses for over 40 years and his award winning 'Surgery' radio show has captivated audiences across the globe for nearly 25 years.

His club nights 'Lift', 'True Spirit' (London's Blue Note) and 'The Surgery' pushed barriers, musically speaking as did his record labels Black On Black and Chilli Funk (with DJ Lofty). He's still found some time to produce numerous Black Music giants including The Temptations, Bobby Womack, Terry Callier, Al Green, Ultra Nate, Jody Watley, Noel McCoy and Snowboy.

To say that Dr Bob is a legend is perhaps an overstated statement, but his dedication to spreading quality Black Music to the world is an inspiration to us all.

'The Surgery' with Dr Bob Jones really is 'so soulful- it hurts!'www.trustthedj.com/DrBobJones

Omar

The website of the new-age singer and composer, Omar...
After a five-year recording hiatus - during which time he’s built his own studio, set up his own label and been touring like a madman – the one and only Omar is back.

Sing [If You Want It], released this year on Ether Records, the British soul supremo’s sixth and perhaps funkiest album so far. Featuring guest appearances from Stevie Wonder, Angie Stone, Common, Estelle, Rodney P, JC Bentley, Canitbe and Ashman, and with additional production from Omar’s brother, Scratch Professor, it’s a brilliant collection of music that manages to break new ground for the artist, yet at the same time re-establishes that unmistakable, unique Omar signature sound with his army of fans.

Jerome Sydenham.New York, London, Nigeria & Cooking

“Some people say great DJs are great cooks. I certainly regard myself as one... ”
New York afro-house/ tech pioneer Jerome Sydenham makes a rare London appearance next weekend, spinning at newly revamped venue Pacha (for former Cross party Twisted Disco: Friday April 25).

Chatting to Skrufff this week, the hugely eclectic producer promised to play ‘an energetic blend of house into tech House with flurries of pan-african electro’ though stressed he won’t be preparing his set too much upfront.

“I certainly do not know my first or last records in advance, I try to prepare more of a specific range depending on the club and crowd,” said Jerome, “This leaves me room to be spontaneously creative as it is important be able to feed off of the energy of the crowd.”

Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): how does playing in London differ from elsewhere (if at all?) are crowds more knowledgeable? harder to engage?)

Jerome Sydenham: “I would simply say that vibes vary from club to club more so than country to country. London is always an exciting challenge as it is, after all, a musical hub.”

Skrufff: Last year you launched Apotek Records in Germany: why Germany: how does the German market- and scene- compare to London?

Jerome Sydenham: “In my opinion, Germany as a whole is more of a center for Tech-based music and have suitable distributors to boot. Whereas in London, the range is wider and therefore more competitive in the wrong sort of way (it kinda’ reminds me of New York)”.

Skrufff: What's your view of the New York club scene: how does today's club scene compare to the late 80s?

Jerome Sydenham: “New York is the most amazing city on earth. However, that being said, the dance music scene is having it rough there at the moment and lack of venues make it worse. On the other hand, the live band scene is thriving and let's not get into the fashion scene were the music is crap with the best crowds (which again kind of reminds me of London). Nothing compares to the late 80s which is why Berlin is so interesting as it somehow capture that precarious energy.”

Skrufff: A lot of the early New York DJs like Todd Terry and David Morales grew up around gang culture in the 80s: how much did you encounter guns and block loyalties in New York back then?

Jerome Sydenham: “My journey started in Brooklyn in a super cool artistic neighborhood called Fort Green which had it's fair share of crackheads and petty crime (plus the occasional kidnapping). Then years later I moved to Soho in Manhattan and the only irritating thing there was the annoying shoppers on weekends looking for Marc Jacobs, Prada etc. Both stores happen to be across the street from my loft.”

Skrufff: You worked as an A&R for major label Warners looking after groups like En Vogue: still a time when record labels splashed loads of money around: how were those days for you (what was the most over-the-top/ decadent situation you encountered?

Jerome Sydenham: “Hahahahaha, I don't think I could answer that question legally. But we had an absolutely excessive great time. It is amazing I survived the decadence.”

Skrufff: You've been DJing since the late 80s: is it easier to prosper now than back then? (what are the key attributes for sustaining longevity?)

Jerome Sydenham: “I have always been musically independent and forward thinking as opposed to be caught in any sort of hype. My love for good music of any sort has kept my imagination active. To be quite frank, I still enjoy the whole bloody thing. But I do have to add that the entire industry is in a state of upheaval and unpredictability. So I guess high quality tunes will guide us.”

Skrufff: Have you ever had any crises of confidence: or got bored of either the music or Djing lifestyle?

Jerome Sydenham: “To be completely honest, no. Simply because there are always transitional periods and those who are talented and committed will enjoy the ups and downs of this privileged journey.”

Skrufff: Why do you think the US has failed to embrace club culture to the extent of countries like the UK and Australia?

Jerome Sydenham: “The US is the greatest consumer of far more things than any other culture on earth, music, film, junk-food etc. We have the problem of a new generation preoccupied with mass media-based hip-hop. Hip-Hop, House and Techno used to co-exist happily back in the day. Eventually the urban dance music scene started shrinking and New York slowly became the last outpost. As we all know it is hard to compete with oversold genres whereas Europe always has enjoyed a healthy promotion and press in the dance music world.”

Skrufff: And why hasn't house music marched hip hop's mainstream/ crossover success?

Jerome Sydenham: “Blame it on US major labels and advertising.”

Skrufff: Why do you put stew recipes on your myspace?

Jerome Sydenham: “Stew is absolutely my favorite food.”

Skrufff: How much do you see parallels between cooking and Djing?

Jerome Sydenham: “Some people say great DJs are great cooks. I certainly regard myself as one.”

Skrufff: How important is image for DJing: how much attention/ effort do you put into clothes/ haircuts etc for playing?

Jerome Sydenham: “I think it is all about the tunes but hey man, if you want to add some flair, go for yours.”

Skrufff: How big a role has luck played in your career?

Jerome Sydenham: “It's always all about hard work. For those who don't understand that, that means complete dedication and commitment. (experience is one of the best teachers).”

Jerome Sydenham spins at Pacha London on Frday April 25 (alongside Jonty Skrufff, Graeme Lloyd, Fabian Chui and Ben Gomori).

Carl Craig, Moby to Play Detroit’s Movement 08

The dates for the next installment of DEMF have been announced. Movement 08: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival will take place May 24-26 in Hart Plaza in the Motor City. A partial lineup has been announced (see below) and includes Carl Craig, Terrence Parker, James Zabiela, Alton Miller, Cool Kids (live), Moby (DJ set), Konrad Black, Tech Itch and Dieselboy. So far, the lineup looks a little light on Detroit talent (and techno on a whole), but new additions to the bill will be announced shortly.

Osunlade - My Reflection

Osunlade - My Reflection [Video & Lyrics]

...Aaww, he lookin' so fine, Osunlade.
He conga that rhythm out
wi every beat from his heart
and soul. Look at the way he movin'
and rushin' wi deep love and intense passion.
He is Osunlade ohh sen-su-al. gee
.

You are my reflection
So all that i have to say must penetrate

You are my reflection
There's no other way to communicate
You are all i need to survive
You help to sustain my life
I don't know what i would do without you
cause if i dont breathe, you dont exist
if i dont call you by your name,
i've mis represented
my soul

You are my reflection
my smile in the morning
my healthy morning meal
my prayer in the afternoon
i call on you
i wake you up in me
deep
deep in the sense of my being
you are indeed a reflection of me
you are my good night's rest
my full day of accomplishments
you are a constant reminder of why i'm here
you, like me, bear seeds of relief to the world
we raise good crop for the hungry souls to eat from
we, as a team, work gracefully
telling the land

you are my reflection
so here i stand with you in mind
and anytime someone smiles at me
or gives me warmth
i know that you are here
you are my sears portrait with no sitting fee
no time to rest when the world is at its knees
no time to make appointments
no time to take notice
no waiting for your name to be called
i move to the rhythm of your heartbeat

love, you are my reflection
with you i have no fear
with you there is nothing i cant bear
you are my weapon against enemies
sometimes people think im crazy
cause with you i see no boundaries
a "no limit" soldier
a woman who's bear fruit and named him after

love with you is real
i have no doubt
cause everytime i speak a hint of fresh air flows out.

mc solaar

boomp3.com

Music | MC Solaar

Alone of the first wave of French rappers, MC Solaar has retained the recitative eloquence and personal presence that made him matter way back in 1990, when he began his career. His "fifth ace" (that’s what "cinquième as" translates to) boasts the greatest musical riches of his five CDs, and these offset the understated drollery of his raps as effectively as the shifting stop-and-go beats of his early CDs reinforced them.

Riches, in Solaar’s case, means sounds you don’t expect to find in a rap environment: a back-up girls’ choir and Eurodisco dreampop in "Solaar pleure" and "Arkansas"; disco and blues guitar, some light drums, and nothing else in "Lève-toi et rap"; girls, again, waving him goodbye in "Hasta la vista mi amor"; harpsichord and violins in "La belle et le bad boy"; a Russian Army chorus in the title song; light, romantic piano in "Les colonies." It’s music that highlights the sadness, or wistful airs, of his complaints. He wants life to be different, and so does his music, as he talks about how things could be, or once were, or will never be (but might have been). On his early CDs, he faced his adversaries and fought them to verbal defeat, or at least a draw. His fourth release, Paradisiaque, marked a change: the "other than the way things are" moved out of reach, and so it stays in Cinquième as — except that the music itself portrays these situations so vividly and pours them into your ear so tangibly that they clearly are within reach. Can Solaar be telling his hardscrabble Northeast Paris ghetto fans that the things hardest to find are those in plain view in one’s own front yard?

Nina Simone- Feelin Good (Joe Claussell Remix)

boomp3.com

DJ/producer/label-head Joe Claussell is perhaps the most influential and in-demand figure on the New York dance scene since Masters At Work. Responsible for some of the best deep and soulful house NYC has heard, Clausell’s Sunday night Body & Soul DJ gig is one of the most legendary house parties of the ’90s. Former owner of the landmark record store Dance Tracks, and long associated with the house labels Spiritual Life and Ibadan, they all reflect his deep love for and his eclectic and multicultural taste in dance music. Much of the global dance movement can be traced back to Claussell’s highly percussive style that incorporates Latin, African, Brazilian and other world rhythms with elements of jazz, rock, disco, and live instrumentation. On his remix of Nina Simone’s "Feelin' Good", Claussell tones down the percussion a bit, instead opting for a lush and soulful downtempo approach.

osunlade feat dmne essence my reflection (dj gregory remix)

boomp3.com

DJ Gregory, from France, is one super-cool player, highly intelligent, passionate about music and more than a little bit crazy, this producer holds great respect from all heavy hitters in the dance music community.

His DJ sets are unmissable and he has an army of fans that follow him wherever he performs. Never selling out and always wary of commercial crossovers this is a
person who has absorbed all the various cultures around him and reproduced them in his highly individual House sound. From Paris, to New York, London and Tokyo, he travelled the globe to hone his production and DJ techniques and absorbed everything that House had to offer.

He has been regarded as the king of the afro beat scene with his highly percussive tracks that feature many African, West Indian and Caribbean flavours. His biggest production ‘Elle’ has touched every house DJ that has heard it and became an instant classic. It is a permanent fixture in most of their record boxes.

Gregory was one of the first pioneering house producers that was invited by Bob Sinclar to become part of the legendary Africanism project; a project that embraced the percussive riffs and flavour of Africa and translated them into energetic house tracks.

However the success he enjoyed here made him realise he could do bigger things with his own label.

"After Africanism, I wanted to do exactly my own shit, I wanted to release my stuff, I wanted to be on my own also not to be under someone else’s is record company. The first release was Tropical Sound Clash so the success of this first release has made a name for the label".

So Faya Combo was born. Named after the translation that Faya means ‘On Fire’ and ‘Combo’ derives from the fact that 70's West Indian and Caribbean music that Gregory loved always included a ‘combo’ of people. He thought that Faya Combo sounded cool and the label was born.

In this package he puts together his inimitable own sound. You will find CD1 is an energetic mix by DJ Gregory himself. He combines a few of his classics along side some heavyweight remixes from the likes of Ame, Kerri Chandler, Yass and Argy and some exclusive new cuts
from the Faya Combo camp.

CD2 showcases his classic releases on an unmixed format which is ideal for CD DJs. Elle ,Attend 1, Don’t Know Malandro, S2 and Solaris; these are essential tracks for any self-respecting House DJ to own. This CD is simply a comprehensive guide to the tracks that lead to his legendary status he has today.

Shannon "Let the Music Play"

Stuck on an eighties groove...One of the greatest dance songs in the early 80's considered at the time to be powerpop along with Madonna's "Holiday"

Carlos Mena

Carlos Mena gives you his favourite 12"on Yoruba Records
Let The Record Play
"I am very proud of this accomplishment, because of the reputation Yoruba has as a dance label. They have always put out quality, and now here I am with the only remix on this 12" of Frank-I's 'Let The Record Play'."
Here are snippets: A SIDE - Original Mix (Osunlade)
B SIDE - CASAMENA "Living Room Remix"
