Samantha James- Angel Of Love

I first heard this track played on cyberjamz internet radio by Wil Milton. His show always seems to drop a delicate soulful tune from time to time.

Samantha James has spent the past 3 years honing her skills within the dance/electronic/soul genre. Her sultry style, vocal cadences, and international rhythms are largely influenced by such artists as Sade, Bebel Gilberto and Morcheeba.

Well worth checking Wil out on Wednesday's, where Milton Music Cafe plays live on air, at cyberjamz.com internet radio. (Click on cyberjamz logo in side bar to link you in)

Body & Soul NYC featuring Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell, Danny Krivit & François K.

If there's one party nowadays that comes closest to making their dancers feel like dolphins, then Body and Soul is it. Dancing in joyous motion in a sea of sound is what Body and Soul is all about, leaving the stress and selfishness that can creep up on you when living in a metropolis, and celebrating the music that we all love so much. And with a trio of selectors like these, you know you're in the safest six hands in the land. The body of work that each of these guys has behind them would be tough to paraphrase, but the three together? Forget it. Just rest assured this very special session has got deep spiritual rhythms for the whole body, and give yourself to it.
...Tu es danse avec moi babysole? Oui, je t'aime.

Nineteen Sixty Nine.

Today is my birthday, typically for me though, it is just another ordinary day. I cannot recall the last time I blew out candles on an iced cake or felt any different being that one year older. That is probably why I often forget what age I am, it's just a number after all, and what counts for me more is, how healthy, happy and free I can be. Anyway I discovered that on the day that I was born top of the charts was The Rolling Stones with 'Honky Tonk Women'. Here they are performing live in London's Hyde Park in 1969.

White Sample Thieves

Hugely respected Detroit producer Theo Parrish railed against ‘the bullshit illusion that dance music has no race, no gender, that it’s about the celebration of some sort of utopian concept’, this week, in a no holds barred tirade against ‘white artists with labels’ stealing ideas from black producers.

“(Underground dance music) is one of the few places a thief will try to copy your music, then send it to you calling it a tribute in hopes of you endorsing it,” he told Detroit portal Moodmat.com

“They’ll find the sources of your samples if you use them, and use them verbatim, then try to cash in on your previous successes . . . The thieves, usually white, are typically the culprits of this phenomena,” he added.

His views reflected those of Detroit pioneer Derrick May who, several years ago admitted feeling highly ambiguous about producers making cover versions of his signature electronic anthem Strings Of Life.

“They’re profiteers at the end of the day, whether they’re good people or bad people, fans, people saying this song has changed my life, whatever; they’re all profiteers. It’s about business,” Derrick complained.

“When a great athlete comes along everybody wants him for the team, not just so he or she can help them win but also because they can bring in fans. Doing a cover is business, it’s a money-making venture and when people see an open window they want to jump in.

The song (Strings Of Life) has never disappeared completely, young kids have discovered it, they don’t know the original version, so people see an opportunity to obliterate the original with these new versions, in the process of making some money. It’s going to happen.”

In Memory Of Nathaniel 'Crocket' Wilkie

It's been a year since the world of music lost Nathaniel 'Crockett' Wilkie, keyboard player extraordinaire with The Masters of Funk Soul and Blues. He was an original member of Gypsy Lane, a group of studio musicians that recorded for acts like, the Ritchie Family and the Village People. For twenty one years he was Patti LaBelle's arranger, producer and keyboard player. He later toured with Najee, Jeff Majors and others. He was responsible for every hit the Village People made. Crockett’s career has placed him in the company of some of music’s greatest.

My friend Coop, also an extremely talented musician and producer, worked closely with Crockett and has remixed a track in memory of him. May the memory of his great talents and wonderful music live on forever.

Out Now On Tru Thoughts Recordings

"'The Art Of Vibration' is the culmination of boundless appreciation of hip hop, funk, soul and club music, an uncanny talent for crafting killer beats and an inspired desire to experiment and take things further, representing a giant step forward – and a tantalising sign of more gems to come.
As well as the CD, the album is available as a special 6-track LP with full CD album inside."

"Incredible beats, infectious hooks and punchy horns – ‘The Art Of Vibration’ encompasses diverse influences and moods with accomplished songwriting and production."

I have read several reviews online about this release, all of which have given much credit to Natural Self and his ability to captivate and diversify. However, I feel probably somehow the production is missing on something, for the intros and hooks which are ridiculously catchy. Perhaps it was not the intention of the producer to create a progressive feel to each track, which I feel unfortunately, lacks throughout. I could not help but feel abandoned and unfulfilled. It did make me look back though and ponder one thought, that over all these years I have listened to music, I have learned to appreciate what moves me, and thus is what drives me to seek and discover music and sounds. The Art Of Vibration is out now.

Grace Jones - Corporate Cannibal

HEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRE'S Grace! Probably as you've never seen her before. I think she's always been strikingly photogenic. The production of this video for her
new single, taken from her forthcoming album 'Hurricane', and released on the Wall of Sound label, cleverly distorts Grace's striking features, protraying images quite stunning to look at and mesmerising to the eye. Grace Jones... live on, live on, live on, live on...You outstand model behaviour of today.

Manchester Got Their On Moodyman ( But Trus'me, Ain't No Imitator.)

'Working Nights' is the debut album from Manchester's latest production prodigy Trus'me. This 8 track set (plus bonus 'live mix' track 12:12 - CD only) features three of the hard to find Love4Music black label 12"s that shot Trusme to notoriety in early 2007, garnering massive support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Karizma, Carl Craig, Benji B, Mad Mats, Jazzanova, Mr Scruff and many many more... His brief carrer has already seen DJ visits to New York, Chicago, Detroit, Vienna, Amsterdam and Belgium as well as guest spots at Manchester institutions Electric Chair and Friends & Family.
He has recently had an exclusive track commissioned for Gilles Petersons "In The House " compilation on Defected and remixes for LCD Soundsystem, Jazzanova and Tru Thoughts are all pending in 2008...

The Trus'me sound references the man's extensive record collection bringing to life decades of funk soul and jazz all with a razor sharp contemporary twist and an inherently Mancunian understanding of basement soul music.... Moodymann comparisons abound but Trus'me's sound is all his own. Expect a bright future from this producer including work with Paul Randolph, Linkwood Family and the mighty Amp Fiddler in the next 12 months...

'Working Nights' contains five previously unreleased gems alongside firm favourites such as 'W.A.R.', 'At the Disco' and a new version of the house behemoth 'Nards', entitled 'Narda'

O is for Osunlade

%%%%%

" Musically, I want to explore some different places, and do a lot less with sound but a lot more with emotion."

%%%%%

This is an exclusive interview with Osunlade by Nokusoul Dj jojo(pictured right). It is the most recent and up to date publication available on the highly acclaimed artiste.I discovered it two days after it was published. Dj jojo himself has collaborated with Osunlade and other famous names from the house scenes such as Timmy Regisford, Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit, Joe Negro, Kerri Chandler... He presents Osunlade with some very direct questions which gives an interesting and open view on one of my favourite figures, in the world of music.

OSUNLADE INTERVIEW....TALKS ABOUT ...... HIS FUTURE PLAN..... THE DJING.....AND HIS SOUND........CHECK THE WHOLE INTERVIEW.....

Osunlade Biography
Born in St.louis in 1969.His backround was one of an innercity child of multi-ethnik backrounds , however he had the African American experience for the most part.Ifa is his life.It has transformed and balance him...in every way.

Yoruba Records Bio
Recognized as one of the most important dance music labels worldwide,Yoruba Records is a pure source of music created to elevate the spirit. Founded by Osunlade in 1999, Yoruba quickly became known for its danceclassics Closer I Get, Dont Change, Cantos a Ochun et Oya & Latina Caf. With the support of DJs and fans worldwide, the label has become synonymous with quality.Osunlade producing and remixing for a multitude of labels and artists, his passion remains with Yoruba Records, and in maintaining their reputation for unparalleled quality in music. With its own family of talented producers and artists, the labels evolution is endless and bright.

*Osunlade? Are you a good person?
-I’d like to think so.

*Tell me why you think that?
- Because everyone else thinks so. Because God says so. Ha ha!

*Have you ever been in a band?
-I have and I am, with a few guys from the south of Italy; jazz band. 9 pieces, horns. I try to control everything and have them do what I want. We all play multiple instruments and we kinda rotate so it’s very interesting. We all evolve as one unit and it changes per song, per situation.

*Osunlade is musician, producer or DJ?
-All of those things in that order. Djing was actually a hobby, I never did a DJ set before I made Paradigm. I got a call about the record, saying they wanted me to come play, and I was like ‘Really?’ I mean I DJ’d when I was young, you know rap and hip-hop and that kind of thing, but I’d never owned and I still don’t own turntables. It’s literally a hobby for me, I don’t play outside of the gigs I do, I don’t have a set up at home, I don’t practise. It’s just not my thing.

*You’re known as having a very distinct sound when you DJ…
-Yeah, well you know I come from funk, soul, jazz, that kind of thing, but my upbringing is about music first and foremost.Electronic music and house music was another form of that expression. Djing for me is the same thing; you know Iwanna educate people. For me the things that are so obscure and different allow me to appreciate the music and not getbored with it. It keeps you fresh. What matters is good music, it doesn’t matter what type it is. It should always be aboutthe music and I always want it in its purest form, so that 10 years, 20 years down the line it will be around. You know you just gave me the Strictly Rhythm compilation? Those records will last forever. They are a part of people’s lives and thosepeople can say they were a part of something.

*Do these lyrics have any relevance to your past: ‘Oh Mickey, you’re so fine!’?
-The relevance to my past was that the lady who sang that was a very fast mentor for a couple of years of my life. Weworked on the Sesame Street project together. I guess she was the first person to give me a job. I lived with her for about2 months, which was a really interesting situation cos then I was experiencing the Hollywood side of the industry withagents calling her everyday and stuff like that. She was the first person I guess to believe in me, and I got to see thatside of the business that I really, really hate now.

*So how important is spirituality to you, and if not, how do you think people should lead their lives?
-It is everything to me. There is nothing that exists that is not 100% ruled by you essence and your soul and your spirituality and your beliefs. I have a saying; ‘If you ever want to make God laugh, show him your plans’. I really believe that. You don’t create anything. You know, you can work towards things and aspire for things, but the key is undying, blind faith. I believe everything was written before you even arrived. I believe in that. My life is a testament to that. Don’t make it hard, life is so simple. Going back to why I’m a good person, I think that my view and my reason for being here is to change peoples views, and to communicate with people in a way without preaching, through the arts.

*Are material goods important to you?
-Sometimes I think they’re important to understand the essence of this world. I think that sometimes you need to appreciate what you have achieved. About 4 years ago I had something very scary happen to me, but it was also like a blessing. My house flooded and I lost everything’ studio, records, everything. I tried to salvage what I could, and during this time, my car was stolen with the rest of the things that I owned. It took away from me the desire to own or take anything with me, because it means nothing. I used to have a thing that when I made a record I would take 50 copies just to have for myself for stock and whatever, but I learnt that it’s just a fucking format, it’s a thing. Once I’ve done it, I’ve released it and it’s in the world then that’s fine. So I don’t even have any CD’s, I don’t have these things in my life anymore.I can unpack my house in 2 hours. It’s just what I need, very simple.

*Where are you from originally?
-Earth. Ha ha!

*You’ve recently completed a year of cleansing, during which periods you had to wear white. Can you tell me something about that?
-It’s called an Iyawo, which means literally ‘Like a baby’. There’s a ceremony where you become a priest which I’ve done several times. The ceremony is called Ocha which means ‘rebirth’ and during this period there are very specific ceremonies which are done depending on which element of nature governs you. During this time you have seven days of being like a newborn baby, you can’t move, you can’t speak, you are fed , you are bathed, everything just like a child. Afterthose 7 days you have a three month period of very humbling things, like you can’t have any contact with anyone. You have no contact with anything, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, sex, anything that has to do with impurities of your soul, your spirit. It’s basically to keep you from picking up negative energies from things.

*Can you tell me about the inspirations behind your forthcoming album?
-This album was just thrown at me. I wasn’t planning on making an album, especially an electronic or dance album, because I’ve been working on the vocal album for such a long time. I recently took a trip to Turkey and spent lots of time trying to learn the instruments, reading the Turkish notes and all that. I started thinking ‘Ok, I’ll put out an EP'’ you know, three songs or something, and then over the next two or three months the album came into fruition. A couple of songs, ‘QueensBattle’ and ‘139th Street’, are actually from ’97. I just felt they were ready to release now. The universe said ‘This is what you have to do now’ and for me it’s really important to give what I create to people who will look after it and protect it. And when I finished this album I said to Simon (Dunmore) ‘Let’s do it for Strictly Rhythm’ and he thought it was great idea as well. It’s an eclectic record, it’s not very commercial but there are some potential singles on it, so it just felt like the perfect time and situation and place.

*Are there any stories behind any of the songs on the album?
-‘Mamma’s Groove’ is strictly a song about my mom. When I was growing up my parents used to have these weekend long parties. They would start Friday and ended Monday. I would wake up stepping over bodies! I used to play record for my parents while they were playing cards, so I have pictures of me when I was like 4 standing at a turntable. When I was growing up I didn’t have an allowance, I had a trip to the record store with my father every Saturday. So my entire life was based around music, introduced to my by my parents. So the song was homage to my mother, because I used to see so much fun in that house. No-one does that anymore you know, have a party for the entire weekend. So that song is about hardcore partying! ‘Frequencies’ is an electro, Eastern influenced song, but that’s inspired by the album cover. I’ve been painting now for a few years and the album cover is a painting called Frequencies, so the track was inspired by the painting.

*What are you passionate about outside of music?
- Life. I love every breath and every moment of life, the good as much as the bad. I’m at a stage in my life that I’m just grateful for everything that happens. Like I said it’s so simple.

*What’s next for you?
-Travelling outside of this realm. Musically, I want to explore some different places, and do a lot less with sound but a lot more with emotion. Make sure you hear this next album. It’s gonna be totally different. Hopefully I’ll be able to able to expose myself without exposing myself!

Interview>>Dj Gregory (June 2008)

Nocturnal: How did you get to be so lucky to make your living in music?
Gregory: It kind of started in 1993 when I became friends with DJ Deep, who was playing with Laurent Garnier all around Paris. He was doing a midday show on the radio from Monday to Saturday and I came and played on that. I slowly built a reputation through the show and started to play in more clubs. I went to New York for a couple of years and when I got back I started on the ‘Africanism’ project, and started my own label, Faya Combo and since then it’s just been getting better and better.

Nocturnal: Do you prefer DJing or producing?
Gregory: I like both, it’s two different worlds. When you’re DJing, you’re in front of a lot of people whereas when you’re producing you are totally on your own. That’s what’s cool about it really, you can be totally alone and absorbed in your work and then you can be up there expressing yourself to hundreds of people and having a real party. Especially when you make a track alone, then you play it out and you get the reaction – that’s when you get a kind of link between the two worlds and that’s what you aim for when you’re in the studio.

Nocturnal: Who have been your inspirations?
Gregory: For the last ten years I have really been inspired by New York house music. All those duets – Sleeveless & Cole, Masters At Work, Mood 2 Swing, they’ve been very inspiring for me. I like the ‘taste’ of electronic music, I look out for that twist that some tunes have where they are just outside the general formula. I try to make danceable music, but with something else on the side. The more you make music, the more you understand how it is done. So you go through jazz, classical music, reggae, rock and whatever, and you start to take inspiration from older music after a while as you see how it was made.

Nocturnal: Which other DJs are you good friends with?
Gregory: I live in Paris, and in Paris you could say there’s a community. I get along of course with my old friends like DJ Deep, Dimitri From Paris, sorry – Mr Dimitri, Chris – that’s Bob Sinclar, Alan – DJ Yellow, and Martin Solveig. My very close friends that I share the studio with like Julian Jabre, Michael and Maxine from Next Evidence, and Claude Monnet. There’s other people I’m sure I’ve forgotten. You know, Paris is a small town so it works in a different way, especially in this industry so you get to know a lot of people on the scene. Bob Sinclar lives on the same street as me; DJ Yellow, Michael and Maxine from Next Evidence, and Julian Jabre – we all share the same studio. Martin Solveig lives about three minutes from here. Dimitri lives fairly close. It’s a ‘hood’!

Nocturnal: Would you call yourself a vinyl junkie?
Gregory: Yes, I’m really fond of records and I buy lots of them. I’ve kind of lost count but I’d say it’s somewhere between 9,000 and 14,000 in all kinds of music, I love music.

Nocturnal: What are your all-time favourite house tracks?
Gregory: ‘Can You Feel It?’ by Mr Fingers, ‘Can U Party?’ by Todd Terry, all the first Transmat stuff by Derrick May, all the early stuff by Carl Craig… in fact everything by Carl Craig, all the Chicago acid house period – Tyray Cooper, Adonis and Marshall Jefferson of course.

Nocturnal: Why did you start your own record label Faya Combo?
Gregory: After Africanism, I wanted to do exactly my own shit, I wanted to release my stuff, I wanted to be on my own also not to be under someone else’s is record company. I’ve been very lucky, I’ve been more than lucky. The first release was Tropical Soundclash so the success of this first release has made a name for the label, its now well recognized because of my first release. So I’ve been very lucky, I’ve a good platform from which I can release better tracks.

Nocturnal: Where did you get the name Faya Combo?
Gregory: That’s very simple because with my friends when something is dope I always say “oh it's on fire.” When we were working on Africanism I was always listening to West Indian and Caribbean music that’s how I came up with that ‘Torment D’ Amour’ break beat that’s been sampled by two hundred and fifty thousand people, [laughs] which is cool. But, in all those seventies Caribbean records there always were Combos of people, so I don’t maybe it was the in thing during that period. So I was like; Faya Combo sounds cool.

Nocturnal: You’ve just done a collaboration with Defected Records. What did you want to achieve with this compilation?
Gregory: The idea for this compilation in the first place was a collection of DJ Gregory tracks that were to be remixed by several super cool producers and put together on one disc. Then we thought that with Defected that it would be cool to add some of the other Faya Combo tracks that I had ready for release. When I mixed down those cuts, I felt that it would be great to feature a few new tracks too, like "Breeze" with K-Alexi or the t.o.k remix that I did especially for the compilation and VOILA, the Faya Combo Sessions was created.

Nocturnal: What is special about disc 2 on the compilation?
Gregory: CD2 features a choice of my Faya Combo essential tracks and forgotten Dj Gregory cuts... all in a DJ friendly format. This will be very useful for those people who like to have exclusive tracks.

Nocturnal: Can you tell me about any of the tracks that you are particularly proud of at the moment?
Gregory: I really like "Breeze" which is one of my new singles off the compilation, it's a new track with K-Alexi, that has this raw basic sexy feel, I love it.

Nocturnal: What do you think about Defected Records?
Gregory: It’s one of the main dance records companies in the UK, and I think that’s why in France everyone from Martin Solveig to Bob Sinclar goes with Defected because they really know how to work the scene. When you think of Defected you also think of Simon Dunmore, and Simon Dunmore was the guy who picked up on ‘Tropical Soundclash’ and ‘Elle’, no-one else really noticed it, but he passionately wanted to do it and I’m really happy that he put that trust in my work.

Nocturnal: Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
Gregory: In ten years time I hope I will still be making music. Perhaps a different kind of music, I really love jazz so maybe a mixture of that with electronic music or something. I love the production aspect of things – finding the right texture and putting the music together, so I hope to be working on that in some way.
