Three DJ Sessions

DJ Kervyn Mark
From deep, soulful house to Afro-Brazilian and psychedelic grooves, this smooth set of underground sounds and classics from veteran dance DJ Kervyn Mark was recorded live on the terrace at PS1’s Warm Up on July 17, 2004. Brooklyn native Kervyn Mark has been spinning around NYC from the early days of hip-hop through the legendary Manhattan nightlife eras of the Paradise Garage, Danceteria and Suzanne Bartsch’s famed Club Savage, where Mark reigned as the first resident DJ. Since his early days as a club maverick, Mark has spun all over the world as well as in his hometown, with notable guest spots at Body & Soul, Dance Promise, and at Bang the Party. Mark serves on the board of directors for Melting Pot NYC, an artists’ collective whose main objective is to enlighten through music.

Beat Pharmacy: Spring Mix
Beat Pharmacy, that is, Brendon Moeller, is a man influenced by the Orb and Future Sounds of London having found these unique artists of the early 90’s while residing in his native South Africa where he worked as a school teacher with kids affected by the war and strife South Africa faced during apartheid. He converses on his journey and drive to produce his own unique sound on the ‘dub leaning end of the musical spectrum. His unique production style got him attention from Francois K and Francois’ Deep Space party devoted to all things in the ‘key of dub’, where he’s a regular guest dj, and where you’ll find his first two full length albums have been released. Brendon’s also released many limited edition 45’s and 12” vinyl platters making him a main stay in the DJ and dub lover scene.

Groove Junkies
Los Angeles’ dynamic production duo Groove Junkies (Evan Landes and Parrish Wintersmith) continue to make DJ’s sound really good with their non-stop stream of releases on their very own record label More House Records. Their signature sound encompasses pumping grooves, uplifting lyrics and undeniable hooks. Born and raised in New York City and Detroit respectively, Landes and Wintersmith bring a tapestry of influences from their native cities. Enjoy this set prepared for the Winter Music Conference 2006, covering some favorite classics as well as their very own productions in the mix.

Timmy Regisford

There's electronica, and then there's dance music. "Don't confuse the two", says veteran New York house DJ Timmy Regisford. "It's computer-based but all live music," he says of the new tracks he's been producing for his Shelter Records imprint. "The drums may be sequenced, but everything else is played live. It's not electronic music," he adds emphatically. At a time when hitting a few keys on a laptop qualifies as 'live,' it's this determination to stick to an organic template for dance music that has kept Shelter busy for over a decade as one of New York's premier underground house parties. Launched in '91 as a follow-up to Regisford's popular radio sets. Shelter has staved off challenges from former mayor Rudolph Giuliani's campaign against nightclubs, the post-9/11 recession, and wave after wave of dance music du jour. Since last year, the club has been newly revitalized by moving its premises to Midtown.Trinidad-born Regisford's organic vision of dance music has also brought him a devoted following in Japan. "It's a place where you come and develop the marketplace," says the DJ, who first visited some 12 years ago. "People get educated to who you are. The crowd that I attract here, they know what Shelter's about. Every time I come I feel they are more and more into the vocal and soulful type of music that I play."This following has seen Regisford pick up the pace of his visits, with the first installment of a new event, Double Trouble, teaming him with fellow NYC house icon Joe Claussell. Regisford's DJing skills have earned him the moniker ' The Maestro,' and his marathon sets, which tour through anything from Afrobeat to Detroit techno to house classics, have seen him joined onstage by the likes of Chaka Khan and Mary J Blige. The imposing DJ says the skills he developed back in '80s radio help him as a club DJ. "What I learned from radio is you have to keep it moving," he says. "I would just play the best part of certain records, lift it up from 12-13 to 18-19 records an hour. At a club I do the same, because it keeps me working and keeps the crowd moving." Regisford has also more than many turntable jocks played a key role as a developer of talent. The one-time A&R man for Atlantic and Dreamworks, who nurtured hit acts like Eric B & Rakim, now has a gig with Universal in charge of its new Def Soul Classics imprint. "We signed Anita Baker, Patti Labelle... We're putting out records by those kinds of artists because for years record companies have forgotten that there are 85 million people in the United States over the age of 30 that don't want to hear Jay-Z or Beyonce."Meanwhile, Regisford also has similar plans afoot for Shelter. "We wanted a place that could house live music. Shelter has always been an underground club, and it's going to remain an underground club, but now that we have four floors I want to expand it to stuff like the Brand New Heavies. I want to create a place where people can come out to see bands like that perform, bands that don't have a place now to perform in New York."

Cyro Baptista

Since arriving in the U.S. in 1980 from his native Brazil, Cyro Baptista has emerged as one of the premier percussionists in the country. His mastery of Brazilian percussion, the many instruments he creates himself and his great charisma have catapulted him into world renown. With his own project, the percussion and dance ensemble known as ‘Beat the Donkey’ Cyro gives free reign to his imagination, mixing his tremendous musical skills, his natural humor and theatrical ways with instruments from Brazil, Middle East, Indonesia, Africa and US. Beat The Donkey’s first self-titled CD (TZADIK) was picked by The New York Times as one of the ten best alternative albums of 2002. In November 2005 , the second CD of the group, “LOVE THE DONKEY” was released by TZADIK.“…The man the stars call when they want that otherworldly flavor in the mix…” (Time Out New York)Cyro’s credits read like a “Who’s Who” of modern music. With Herbie Hancock, he recorded and performed worldwide with the Grammy award-winning project “Gershwin’s World”. He also participated in the newest Hancock’s release “Possibilities” (with Paul Simon and Sting) and shares composition credit with Herbie and Trey Anastasio. This track, “GELO NA MONTANHA”, was nominated “Best Pop Instrumental Performance” for this year’s GRAMMY Awards. He recorded and toured with Yo-Yo Ma’s Brazil Project, with Trey Anastasio (of Phish) and with John Zorn. For 3 years he toured the world with Paul Simon’s “Rhythm of the Saints” and appeared on his Concert in Central Park release. In addition, Cyro toured the US with Sting in 2001. He co-produced with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra a Brazilian Carnaval modern jazz concert. Among other artists that Cyro has performed and recorded with are : David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Kathleen Battle, Gabrielle Roth, Gato Barbieri, Dr. John, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Toni Bennett, Robert Palmer, Melissa Etheridge, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Michael Tilson Thomas, Daniel Barenboin, Bobby McFerrin, Gipsy Kings, Medeski Martin & Wood, Spyro Gyra, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Santana. He has also played with many respected Brazilian artists such as Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Marisa Monte, and Nana Vasconcelos.
I found an interesting piece of video footage with Cyro Baptista. It features drummer Billy Martin and a group of musicians, who explore the production of sounds and techniques using a variety of objects. Press play to listen to and watch 'An Exotic Percussion Workshop.'

Queep Organic Music.

Most house labels produce music to suit a certain style of DJ, but not Queep Organic House, setting them apart from most other labels. Queep specializes in producing diverse remix packages, with remixes made to suit the original tracks, rather than exact styles. This type of unique ideology gives both the label and the artists more experimental freedom with styles, and allows the label to work with a rich & diverse roster of talents. The labels music policy is based loosely around the Progressive House, Deep House, Electro House & Tech-House genres, but on their quest for experimentation they have also included Micro-House, Broken Beat, Breaks and Drum N' Bass remixes on recent releases. The roster of artists is a mixture of more recognisable names like DA FRESH, ANGEL ALANIS, RICHARD EARNSHAW, TOM BELTON, DJ TAUCHER, PARALLEL SOUND, DISCOUNT RHINOS, TIM RICHARDS, WEST LONDON DEEP and plenty of exciting underground talent including MR FUZZ, NUNO ROZZ, ELEKTRODOUCHE, A.C.K. & SIMON POINT, MARCO BRUZZANO & ROBERTO CAPUANO, THEE-O, MAN IN A ROOM, MELCHYOR A, LAYERS OF SOUND, ATOM, FAMILY TREE, LARS SCHNEEMANN, NOSTALGIC DANCE ORCHESTRA and MASSIVEDRUM, most of which have had succesful releases on various other underground labels. With having such an open music policy & production roster, its no surprise that recent QUEEP ORGANIC HOUSE releases have garnered support from an extremely wide variety of underground and overground djs, including the likes of PAUL OAKENFOLD, MARCO CORVINO, JONATHAN ULYSSES, KID MASSIVE, FLASH BROTHERS, PARALLEL SOUND, DJ TAUCHER, JONDI & SPESH, TALL PAUL, MASON, Q-BURNS ABSTRACT MESSAGE, ROCCO, MIKE MONDAY, TIGERHOOK CORP, ONRIKA, MARK KAVANAGH, RANDALL JONES, SOUTHMEN, PAKO & FREDERIK, NIGHT ARCHITEKS, TYLER STADIUS, MARK MUSSELMAN, DEEPSKY, PAUL HUGHES, JEAN CLAUDE ADES (aka JCA), TOM WAX, 2 ELEMENTS, BOOGIE PIMPS, DR. MOTTE, MR GROOVE & VERGAS and literally thousands more jocks worldwide... Queep Organic House releases have been also charted in various hype charts around the world, including RELEASE PROMO, BALANCE RECORD POOL and NOCTURNAL MAG. With such a wide variety of production styles, and an almost 100% open music policy, you should never know what to expect from this label..... in this day and age, that cant be a bad thing! QUEEP HQ is currently in Dublin, Ireland.

I Believe In Me. (A Little Bit Of Self Analysis)

One can only discover the true person you are by turning introvert. To discover the core of your personality and find the superhumanly beautiful person that you truly are, you must gradually wade through your mind, body and intellect. People of today, tend to be extrovert becoming preoccupied with th external world, seeking out pleasures, joy and knowledge instead of searching the Self within. The mind then becomes restless and agitated, intellect loses all clearness to enquire into existence. I believe in me. My law in life is that I will live it pure. Free in mind body and soul, peaceful, blissful and a joy within. I spend a lifetime searching and looking to find this, only to discover heaven's in me.

Dwayne Morgan~ Everything

The multi-talented Canadian poet and musician, delivers a moving and genuinely touching spoken word performance. Accompanied by the smooth remix skills of Kenny Carvajal, Dwayne has reworked his original recording by laying down a brand new vocal track over Kenny's lush, laid-back house beats. What's so pleasing about this track is it's depth, with Dwayne being supported by the vocals of Lorraine Reid and Peter Miller and also a live guitar provided by the awesome Peter Lerner. Kenny's remixes bring these elements together and with his addition of bass, beats and an organ. The result is an uplifting, emotive house track. Kenny's remixes, a vocal, guitar dub, and instrumental, further cement him as one of the most important producers around today. The vocal is obviously the main mix here, but the guitar dub and instrumental mixes complete the package. Full focus is on Peter Lerner for the guitar dub with his subtle acoustic skills rolling along nicely over Kenny's house groove. The instrumental is all about the underlying groove from the original vocal mix. An accomplished package, 'Everything' is a platform for the genius of Dwayne Morgan, the mixing-desk skills of Kenny Carvajal and a high-calibre benchmark for all future Camio Recording releases'. Available to buy at traxsource. Buy it here http://www.traxsource.com/index.php?act=show&fc=tpage&cr=titles&cv=1940
